Checking Protection Options

Whether it’s a simple checkbook miscalculation, costly car repairs, unexpected medical bills or unplanned travel expenses, we understand mistakes happen and emergencies arise.

Virginia Educators Credit Union offers three different protection options to make sure your checking account is protected in a way that best meets your financial needs.

Overdraft Protection from Savings:
Automatically transfers funds from your savings account to your checking account to pay for overdrafts, as long as funds are available.

Automatic Savings Transfer is a free service available for all members with a checking account. Regulation D restricts savings transfers to 6 per month.

Overdraft Protection Line of Credit:
Automatically transfers funds from an Overdraft Protection Line of Credit to a checking account to pay for overdrafts, up to your available limit. This protection option helps you avoid per-item overdraft and/or non-sufficient fund fees.

An Overdraft Protection Line of Credit is a credit product and subject to credit approval. There is no limit on the number of transfers that can be made from your Overdraft Protection Line of Credit to your checking account.

Courtesy Pay:
Most VECU members with recurring deposits to an account are eligible for Courtesy Pay, which pays overdraft items up to your Overdraft Privilege limit and eliminates the fee for non-sufficient funds. Courtesy pay covers overdrafts for checks written off your account, Automated Clearing House (ACH) withdrawals, Bill Payment transactions, and recurring debit card transactions without any effort on your part. There’s no cost for this service if you don’t use it, and a $30.00 fee applies each time you do.

To extend your Courtesy Pay coverage to your everyday debit card transactions, you must have completed and returned the Courtesy Pay Opt-In form or have selected Opt-In at account opening.

If you have any questions about VECU’s Courtesy Pay program or if you would like to check the status of Courtesy Pay on your VECU account, please Contact Us.

VECU pays overdrafts at our discretion and reserves the right not to pay. For example we typically do not pay overdrafts if an account is not in good standing, if the member is not making regular deposits, or if they have too may overdrafts. Each item presented will be assessed an overdraft fee if paid or a nonsufficient fund fee if it is returned.
